In high school when it came to skin care products I typically stuck to Clean & Clear. While some of those same products are my ride or dies, my skincare needs have changed. I am no longer just washing my face and moisturizing every morning and night. Over the past couple of years, my routine has developed into a relaxing regime I try to stick to every night.
I am blessed to say that my skin has never been too large of a problem for me. As I watched kids in high school be attacked by acne prone skin, I thanked my lucky stars (and my genes) that for the most part my skin was clear. During sports seasons I would have more of a problem due to the excess amount of sweat and oil I was releasing, but nothing I could not handle. While I still did have the annual Mt. Everest pimple in the most unforgiving places (chin, nose, and yes, even between my eyebrows) I quickly covered it up with concealer. After watching numerous YouTube videos and learning more about skin care and the brands available outside of the drugstore, I became fascinated with having the best skin possible.
One big step in having the clear skin I do today was investing in my Clarisonic. I received my Clarisonic Mia 1 as a gift a year ago and it has changed the way I treat my skin. This tool not only gives me 60 seconds of what feels like an at home facial, but it clears my pores in a jiffy making my skin feel smooth and refreshed. I do advise to give this tool time as the first few times I used it, it broke me out like it does to many other first users. I recommend sticking with it for at least a month, but if you are not in love with it, by all means keep the receipt and return it. The company sells a numerous amount of brush heads depending on your skin type so I do highly recommend testing a few out. I typically only use my Clarisonic 1-2 times a week as you are not supposed to exfoliate your skin more than that.
The next line of products I decided to take a peek into was Lush Cosmetics. I love Lush and everything they stand for. They are 110% against animal testings and sell many products which most if not all of the proceeds go to some sort of charity. Their products are all natural and they use the best ingredients to help your skin live up to its full potential. If you have never tried their bath bombs your life will be changed the day you do, trust me. I also absolutely adore their masks. I own Cup O’ Coffee and Mask of Magnaminty. I often incorporate these into my Sunday routines as a pick me up before the week begins. Cup O’ Coffee is the perfect mask for winter. The ground up coffee helps to brighten and rejuvenate your skin. When washing it off it scrubs away the dead skin and leaves your face feeling fresh. Not only does it work like a charm, but smells just like a hot cup of joe. The Mask of Magnaminty is also one of my all time favorites from Lush. This mask I especially love in the Summer time or whenever my skin feels clogged. As soon as you put this on, a burst of peppermint refreshes your face. As it sits on the skin and works its magic, it begins to dry a lighter green color. When you wash this off, the crushed up almonds gently exfoliate your skin. Though he next day you may have a few white heads, it does its job at clearing out your pores.
As I began to try to incorporate more sophisticated products into my routine, I discovered the beloved Mario Badescu. All I can say about these products is God bless him. These products have transformed the way I look at blemishes. In high school I would pick and ruin my skin, but with these products, I know the job will be done overnight. These products to run a little pricier than your average drugstore skin care items but they are worth the money. The Mario Badescu Buffering Lotion is perfect for those under the skin blemishes that seem to linger on your skin for a week. I apply the product on the blemish before bed and wakeup with a noticeably decreased size blemish; truly a miracle worker. My other holy grail Mario product is the Drying Lotion. After this product was featured in Kylie Jenner’s Snapchat, every girl was on the hunt for it. This product is meant to target oily whitehead blemishes. Instead of popping pimples and damaging your skin, this product is the perfect solution to getting rid of your unwanted guests. It is VERY important though, NOT to shake this product. The point is to dip a cotton swab all the way to the bottom into the pink sediment, lift it up and out and apply directly to the blemish. My newest Mario Badescu product has been the Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater. This product has not exactly been life changing but it is nice to have on hand. I often use it before moisturizer as an extra skin boost, as a makeup primer/setting spray, or a mid afternoon skin refresher. The spray is fairly cheap compared to their other products so I recommend at least trying it out.
One of the new products I just recently picked up was the Trader Joe’s Spa Face Wash with tea tree oil. Not only do I love Trader Joe’s, but their skin care products have proven their worth to me. My mom usually uses their normal face wash and my whole family is obsessed with their lavender hand & body lotion (also HIGHLY recommend if you are a lavender fan). I decided to pick this up as I was running out of my other face wash that I was not a fan of. So far I have been pleasantly surprised. It has an herbal smell and lives up to its “spa” name. It is by far much cheaper than getting a facial but feels the same as the products specialists use. It leaves my skin feeling soft and smooth and at around $5.99 a bottle, the price can not be beat.
As for moisturizer, I have stuck to my holy grail Clean & Clear Product. The Clean & Clear Dual Action Moisturizer is a product I have used since middle school and still remains one of my favorites. It has never irritated my skin and has done its job. If you are looking to save a few extra bucks, I typically opt for the generic Target Up & Up brand which does the job as well. Photographed I have a sample size of the Ren Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream. This was passed on to me from my mom as she received it in her monthly Ipsy subscription. I have been using it as a nightly moisturizer since it is a bit thicker than my normal daily moisturizer and I have enjoyed it thus far. After looking up that the full size is almost $45.00 I do not believe I would purchase it, but for the time being it is a good product.
Though my skin is not and never will be perfect, these products have made my skin struggles far less severe. I am still on the hunt for a perfect black head remover and am open to suggestions to any products that you all love!
